conjunction with Dan Wright of ModWright, Response Audio released another
RAM Signature product early 2003. The RAM Signature CD25. This player has
become very well known for an exceptional unit for redbook CD playback
with a sonic signature approaching that of a high quality vinyl playback
system. See the "White Paper" below for complete details.
If you are
familiar with ModWright's truth mods for the Sony and Philips SACD units,
then you already know the tube stage that is being utilized in the RAM CD.

The Response
Audio RAM Signature CDP player utilizes the Music Hall CD25 as it's
platform.
The RAM CD
player is not just an "upgraded" version of the Music Hall
CD-25. To "upgrade" is to replace internal components with
better quality pieces. Anybody can do that.
To "modify" a product is to actually change the circuitry or add
to it components that were not originally in the circuit. With the
custom designed tube stage, the RAM
CD player is a MODIFIED player.
With the RAM
CD player, we are actually installing a tube stage to the unit as well as
upgrading internal signal path components.

What
to expect
The RAM
player is Quieter.
The background
is blacker revealing more low level detail, ambience
retrieval & three dimensionality. - other players that use high gain
signal tubes require feedback. Feedback can cause noise. Utilizing the
5687 tube allows the removal of feedback, thus a quieter background and
lower noise floor.. This also applies to other components. Just take a
look at the RAM Signature amplifiers which utilize the 12AU7, another low
gain signal tube, with no negative feedback.
The RAM CD25 is More dynamic, smoother, with
exceptional inner detail, low level resolution and transparency.

UPDATE:
The RAM CD now utilizes NO Opamps in it's circuitry.
The RAM CD starts out
life as a Music Hall CD-25. The unit features a Phillips
transport and chip-set with Burr Brown 1732 DAC and HDCD
capabilities. The stock design incorporates an op-amp driven I-V
stage followed by a discrete gain/buffer/filter stage. The output is
cap-coupled with electrolytic capacitors and standard relay muting
system.
Because we felt that
the stock unit was a solid performer and featured a quality
transport and chip-set, we decided to take it to an entirely new
level. The result is the RAM CD.
The first mods
included upgrading the rectifiers to ultra-fast soft-recover
types, to reduce semi-conductor switching noise. This lowers the
noise floor and improves bass response. The electrolytic coupling
caps and the discrete gain/buffer/filter stage are then completely
bypassed in favor of our own tube Class A gain/buffer stage,
featuring Auricap coupling caps and zero feedback design. The
tube circuit features two Cryo-treated NOS Tung-Sol 5687 tubes.
This is a military spec tube with extremely linear operation and
exceptional sonics. This tube is, in our opinion, far superior to
the standard 12AX7 and 6DJ8/6922 used in comparable designs.
A separate
transformer and tube stage power supply, are built into the unit,
alongside the stock analog and digital power supply. This includes a
Hammond power transformer and our own PCB based high-voltage
tube supply circuit, featuring CRC filtering and ultra-fast
soft-recovery diodes.
All signal wire
inside the player is ultra-pure high-quality stranded copper wire
that has been Cryo-treated. Signal path components include Dale-Vishay
resistors and Auricap capacitors.
The result is a
clean, dynamic, and very musical presentation with black background,
dead-quiet operation and bandwidth from 10Hz - 100Khz.
