Empirical Design Cables - Speaker, Interconnects, Power & Video

Speaker Cables and Interconnects Available for Audition
Here at Response Audio, we have been using the Empirical Design ED422 interconnect cables and ED213 speaker cables (with WBT termination) in our reference systems for the past year. For those who have come in to audition any of our Bella EXtreme products, these are the cables you were listening to. Now you can have these very same cables in your own system as well.

Founded in 1993, Empirical Design remains steadfastly committed to
developing leading-edge products for the audio and video enthusiast, in
accordance with a few time-honored principles:

1. There’s more than one way to accomplish a task.
2. Everything matters.
3. Do it as simply as possible, but no simpler.
4. Don’t miss the forest for the trees.

As exemplified by their current range of audio and video cables, the
Empirical Design process begins with a comprehensive evaluation of relevant design and
construction parameters. They rigorously assess each variable in real-world, high
performance audio and video systems, rather than relying on simplistic models of idealized
wire behavior or textbook filter theory. The primary goal being “maximize long-term listening
and viewing enjoyment”.

In keeping with their aesthetic preference for simple, elegant solutions to technical problems,
they tend to avoid the use of fancy “designer” parts and unnecessarily complex topologies
whenever possible. Premium quality yet cost-effective components are creatively utilized in
minimalist configurations, in order to deliver standard-setting performance at rational prices.

ED422 Interconnect Cable

Our fourth-generation analog interconnect cable design, ED422 sets a new standard for both absolute performance and cost-effectiveness. Thin, flexible, and robust, ED422 exploits the exceptional noise-rejection characteristics of a classic star-quad geometry. Skin-depth related phase shift within the audio frequency range is minimzed by the specific choice of conductor size. A tightly wrapped Teflon tape jacket maintains precise mechanical alignment. Insulation materials are kept to an absolute minimum thickness, to reduce energy storage and maximize signal responsiveness. (If you requie monster-sized cables artificially fattened with layers of "marketing wrap", then ED422 is not for you!). The custom ED422X variation adds an external ground wire, facilitating unshielded balanced-mode operation.

ED213 Speaker Cable

Speaker cables present a major dilemma to the cable designer. They must carry sufficient current to transfer power from the amplifier to the speaker with minimal loss. However, merely increasing wire thickness will introduce a host of distortion-generating artifacts — most significantly, phase shift due to the skin-depth of the conductor. In order to solve this problem in the simplest, most elegant manner possible, Empirical Design has developed an innovative conductor for ED213 speaker cable. High purity copper strands are woven into a single-layer braid surrounding a Teflon* tube. The resulting conductor functions as a "virtual cylinder" with a net cross-sectional area equivalent to a 13 gauge wire, but with an effective wall thickness of less than 1 millimeter. Since all of the conductive material is located along the tubular wall surface, skin-depth related phase shift is eliminated across the entire audio frequency range, yet the conductor still possesses sufficient size to transfer your amplifier's full power to the loudspeakers. The Teflon*insulated positive and negative conductors are bonded together in a parallel geometry, preventing relative motion in order to precisely control cable reactance. The cylindrical conductor geometry is even maintained through the environmentally-sealed termination connectors; there are no loose strands to oxidize or break with long-term usage. ED213 will continue to perform ideally year after year, coupling your amplifier to your loudspeakers with breathtaking clarity, precision, and responsiveness.
