Custom Built External Crossovers

We are now releasing our custom built crossover for the LS-6 and LS-9 loudspeakers that were available from AV-123 as well as available in kit form from GR-Research and now provided by Angel City Audio sold through a few select dealers including here at Response Audio. These two pair of loudspeakers are amazing values and our crossovers bring forth their fullest potential.

We do not alter the original topology of the design rather build them from the ground up using what we believe to be exceptional components for a smooth yet refined presentation.

The sonic signature of the crossover is influenced by the use of some of the most highly regarded passive components currently available in the industry. The use of Mundorf and ClarityCap ESA capacitors, high quality foil inductors and nothing but non-inductive resistors used throughout. Mills non-inductive resistors are used in all critical locations.

Each crossover assembly maintains the same topology and circuit designed by Danny Richie of GR Research and is matched within 1% of each other. Our crossovers are point to point wired ensuring the simplest and least intrusive signal path. A custom satin black, twin chamber external crossover enclosure houses the crossover and resides between the speaker and amplifier in the circuit path. The link between the crossover and speakers is made via a custom umbilical cord utilizing high purity wire and connection to the speaker crossovers utilizes professional grade speak-on connectors with your choice of gold banana or spade termination at the loudspeaker cabinets. Bybee purifiers in this link (or in the crossover) are available as an additional option.

The passive bass management is handled by a series of switches, 4 positions standard, accessible by the user allowing you to tailor the bass output in the 40Hz to 100Hz region to your specific room in real time.

Each crossover is inserted into a test system and auditioned at Response Audio prior to shipment.

The enclosures for the external crossovers will be assembled of Baltic Birch Ply and painted a satin black as seen in the pieces below. We use a dual chamber enclosure for each crossover providing good separation of components for the least noise potential. We can also apply a clear or transparent acrylic top plate so you can show off your custom built crossover to all that come to hear your speakers. We can build the enclosures as simple or exotic as you desire including a few hardwood options to mate with the Piano Gloss Black loudspeakers.

We HAD to use external enclosures as the physical size of the upgraded crossovers is much larger and heavier than the original. They will not easily fit into the speaker cabinets.

Mundorf Silver/Gold/Oil Crossovers

The Mundorf SGO LS-9 crossovers contain higher grade capacitors throughout the entire crossover circuit (not just the high pass filter). The overall dimensions of the enclosure is also a bit larger than seen here to accommodate the larger physical size of these components

Hardwood Enclosures

We can custom build you enclosures from several types of hardwood. Hardwood enclosures are a perfect contrast for the Piano Black LS speakers. Most wood species - add $375

Bybee Purifiers
Bybees are a controversial product. We recommend you do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

Acrylic top panels:  Clear - add $50 / Transparent - add $75 (your choice of color)

Bi-wire: Add $45 - includes additional set of binding post

WARRANTY

Our crossovers come with a standard 1 year parts and labor warranty when only the crossovers are purchased.

If speakers are purchased new from Response Audio, Angel City Audio or any of it's authorized dealers, the crossovers carry a 3 year warranty.

If you are building the LS-6 or LS-9 from a kit and using a high quality internal wiring, please let us know and we will work with you to assure the connection cords are constructed of the same wiring.

Included with your crossovers are also a set of instructions on how to bypass your stock crossover. The only thing you will need to purchase is one set of binding post (for each speaker cabinet) or we can supply them for you.

I do NOT recommend asking for upgrading the umbilical cords with an expensive wire if you own the stock AV-123 loudspeakers as you would only be wasting your money. These connector cords are an extension of the wiring used within your speakers and should be of a similar type.

Shown below is a truly amazing system containing a beautiful pair of custom built CLS-9 loudspeakers utilizing a pair of Response Audio Mundorf Silver/Gold external crossovers with Teflon bypass capacitors, Bybee Purifiers and JPS Labs Alumiloy umbilical cords (internal wiring inside cabinets is also JPS Labs).
