but rather an exclusive, new design from Dan Wright himself. Many audio enthusiast
are already familiar with Dan's work in his very successful digital component
modifications over the years. While I could rant about the sonic virtues
of this product all day long, the best way for you to understand its
potential is to come in and listen for yourself. Even the most discriminating
listeners will not be disappointed.
The SWL 9.0
SE is on display and available for audition in our New York location as well
as at Jam'n Audio, our Chicago location. We hope you will come in for an audition.
Design Information:
Power Supply: Choke input current regulated, regulated DC heaters, discrete
FET regulated B+ voltages.
Gain Stage: Fixed battery bias, ‘Mu’* type gain/buffer stage.
Power Sequence: Mute-on delay turn-on sequence with soft-start B+ supply.
Volume Control: Remote Control Alps motorized volume potentiometer.
Design Philosophy:
The SWL 9.0SE was designed to offer the Audiophile, World-Class Performance at
a Real-World price.
The unit is voiced to offer a full, fast and accurate recreation of the entire
frequency range. Bass is deep, tight and authoritative and high frequencies
sparkle. The tonal balanced is designed to be accurate and detailed without
edge or glare. The liquidity and holographic imaging of tubes is present,
without the ‘soft’ or ‘syrupy’ sound often attributed to tube designs.
Use of the very linear 5687 tube and pure Class A circuitry allow for low
distortion and exceptionally low noise.
Top quality
parts are used throughout, including FRED and Schottky diodes, metal film
Vishay resistors, ceramic tube sockets and hiqh-quality film caps in signal
path applications insure exceptional performance.
*The ‘Mu’ stage circuit type used in the design is credited to Alan
Kimmel. Alan was consulted during the design process.

9.0SE tube rectified power supply now available:
Okay guys, after much deliberation, ModWright has decided to go ahead and
make available, the tube-rectified power supply upgrade for
the SWL 9.0SE. They are doing this largely because it simply improves
the performance of the 9.0SE a significant amount and we always want to
offer an attractive upgrade path to all ModWright customers.
Two options available:
1) New SWL 9.0SE ('Signature Edition') tube linestages are now
available for $2995 retail
2) Existing SWL 9.0SE ('Special Edition') units may be upgraded to include
tube-rectified power supply for $500 + shipping both ways. Contact us for
details.
Details:
New SWL 9.0SE units will have the same faceplate. The distinguishing
feature will be the S/N on the back of the unit, to indicate that it is a
'Special Edition' vs. a 'Signature Edition'. That and the fact
that there is a big old tube in the power supply pretty much gives it away
.
The new tube-rectified supply uses a single 5AR4 tube rectifier (Sovtek).
The power supply has also been re-designed to include much better PSRR
and voltage regulation, via constant current sources. The
combination of tube-rectifier and improved voltage regulation together make
a BIG difference in the sound of the unit.
Sonically, the improvements include fuller body and midrange, improved
bass response and a significant improvement in soundstage, presence and
overall musicality. Same as you get with the SWLP. I feel that the
tube rectifier upgrade adds more 'tube' sound to the 9.0SE without
detracting in any way from the unit's fantastic bass response, dynamics and
sparkling highs. The low noise floor is also maintained, if not
improved upon.
