LS 36.5 Balanced Tube Linestage

MWI LS 36.5 Tube Linestage with balanced inputs and
outputs.
"...Dan could probably rest on laurels for a few years
after producing something as good as the 36.5. I could
see this line stage emerging as THE preamp for $5000 in
the same way that his SWL 9.0 SE is THE preamp for $2500
among those in the know. Take five, Dan, and enjoy that
blue LED glow." - Marc Phillips writing for Tone Audio.

"Rather than a refinement of the prior model, it
indicates a new platform altogether. Coming a few short
years after the 9.0's launch, Dan Wright musta hitched
some wild ride on a steep learning curve. This isn't a
MkII revision in a gussied-up box to charge a pretty
penny for a spin and packaging job. This isn't even a
hot-rodded modification. This is a new ball game on an
altogether loftier plateau." - Srajan Ebaen, 6Moons.com

LS 36.5 Power Supply
After
out 36.5 linestage was developed, we still had loyal ModWright
customers that wanted us to take the next step.
The PS 36.5 is an
outboard, duel-mono power supply that can be added to an
existing 36.5. Combining dual discrete voltage rectification and
all tube voltage regulation stages along with removing the power
supply from the main chassis took the sound of the 36.5 to
another level of excellence. There is an increase in separation,
weight, and resolution that has to be experience to be believed.
Six tubes are used
in the PS 36.5: a pair of 6H30 triodes for signal gain and
buffering, a pair of 6EA7/6EM7 triodes for voltage regulation
and a pair of 5AR4 (and equivalent) for rectification, making
this power supply a true dual mono design.
Existing LS 36.5
units can be upgrade or two box preamplifier can be ordered as a
LS 36.5 DM.
We feel this new
upgrade offers a substantial breakthrough in value and
performance. The PS 36.5 is styled to match the LS 36.5 and the
rectifier tubes are exposed to allow ease in swapping rectifier
tubes.
The
new PS 36.5 dual-mono outboard power supply is now
available as an upgrade to the LS 36.5 linestage. It is
also available from your dealer as a set, or if you have
an existing LS 36.5, you may send the LS 36.5 back in to
have it retro-fitted for the new PS 36.5.
Customer
Feedback:
"During the weekend listening we managed to swap in and
out four preamps - The 36.5 with its fancy PSU, my SWLP (yes I
still have it and it is still for sale - once my buddy heard the
36.5 he wasn't thinking about the SWLP anymore ), the First
Sound PD MII and a BAT VK51se. I really wanted to compare these
to an ARC REF 3 also but there just wasn't one around.
The BAT was close to the 36.5 as far as SS width and
depth was concerned. Bass extension seemed about the same but
the 36.5 beat it on the purity of its high end and its really
outstanding leading edge transients/dynamics. Channel and image
separation were similar but the 36.5 had more air around
everything and those leading edge transients made everything -
vocals and individual instruments - much more "real" sounding
and more holographic. The BAT couldn't then match the 36.5 in
communicating the emotional content of the music. Vocals are so
clean and so detailed with the 36.5 that you can't but hear the
emotion - this preamp literally drips with emotion.
The First Sound sounds a bit flat when compared to the
36.5 and the BAT. It's just outclassed at this point.I forgot to
say...This thing is worth every penny. I go to work so I can
come home and listen to amazing music. And the wheel goes round
and round..." A. Bradley 12.05.07
"...when I put on my Willy Porter: “High Wire Live” disc
(by the way, a highly recommended disc of great acoustic guitar
with fine lyrics
and melodies) I had this big freakin’ smile across my
face as the first notes played--boy there sure is more to an
acoustic guitar than you think! I could already tell that this
pre was a BIG leap closer to reality with only about 150 hours
on it. I could also tell that this pre had some of the 9.0SE’s
DNA, but this baby is WAY better all around as it should be. I
was amazed at how much more of the music that IS recorded on a
CD that I could hear. The music playing was so natural sounding,
musical yet accurate to the source in every way."
- T. O'Connor 1.03.08
Details of the PS 36.5 include completely dual-mono
design, including two transformers, chokes, main power supply
boards and the addition of dual-mono
tube-voltage-regulation stages and dual tube recitifiers. There
is a single AC cord and umbilical that connects the PS 36.5 to
the LS 36.5.
The improvements in bass response, definition, speed,
separation, body, microdetail and microdynamics are stunning.

ModWright SWL
9.0SE & 9.0SE with Tube Rectified Power Supply
Remote Control Linestage
Response Audio
is proud to be an authorized dealer for the SWL 9.0 SE
linestage from ModWright Instruments, Inc. This new product
is not a modification of any existing product but rather an
exclusive, new design from Dan Wright himself. Many audio
enthusiast are already familiar with Dan's work in his very
successful digital component modifications over the
years. While I could rant about the sonic virtues of this
product all day long, the best way for you to understand its
potential is to come in and listen for yourself. Even the
most discriminating listeners will not be disappointed.
The
SWL 9.0 SE is on display and available for audition in our
New York location as well as at Jam'n Audio, our Chicago
location. We hope you will come in for an audition.
Design
Information:
Power Supply: Choke input current regulated, regulated DC
heaters, discrete FET regulated B+ voltages.
Gain Stage: Fixed battery bias, ‘Mu’* type gain/buffer
stage.
Power Sequence: Mute-on delay turn-on sequence with
soft-start B+ supply.
Volume Control: Remote Control Alps motorized volume
potentiometer.
Design Philosophy:
The SWL 9.0SE was designed to offer the Audiophile,
World-Class Performance at a Real-World price.
The unit is voiced to offer a full, fast and accurate
recreation of the entire frequency range. Bass is deep,
tight and authoritative and high frequencies sparkle. The
tonal balanced is designed to be accurate and detailed
without edge or glare. The liquidity and holographic imaging
of tubes is present, without the ‘soft’ or ‘syrupy’ sound
often attributed to tube designs. Use of the very linear
5687 tube and pure Class A circuitry allow for low
distortion and exceptionally low noise.
Top quality parts are used throughout, including FRED and
Schottky diodes, metal film Vishay resistors, ceramic tube
sockets and hiqh-quality film caps in signal path
applications insure exceptional performance.

*The ‘Mu’ stage circuit type used in the design is credited
to Alan Kimmel. Alan was consulted during the design
process.

SWL 9.0SE tube rectified power
supply now available:
Okay guys, after much deliberation, ModWright has decided to
go ahead and make available, the tube-rectified power
supply upgrade for the SWL 9.0SE. They are doing
this largely because it simply improves the performance
of the 9.0SE a significant amount and we always want to
offer an attractive upgrade path to all ModWright customers.
Two options
available:
1) New SWL 9.0SE ('Signature Edition') tube
linestages are now available for $2995 retail
2) Existing SWL 9.0SE ('Special Edition') units may be
upgraded to include tube-rectified power supply for $500 +
shipping both ways. Contact us for details.
Details:
New SWL 9.0SE units will have the same faceplate. The
distinguishing feature will be the S/N on the back of the
unit, to indicate that it is a 'Special Edition' vs. a
'Signature Edition'. That and the fact that there is a
big old tube in the power supply pretty much gives it away
.
The new tube-rectified supply uses a single 5AR4 tube
rectifier (Sovtek). The power supply has also been
re-designed to include much better PSRR and voltage
regulation, via constant current sources. The
combination of tube-rectifier and improved voltage
regulation together make a BIG difference in the sound of
the unit.
Sonically, the improvements include fuller body and
midrange, improved bass response and a significant
improvement in soundstage, presence and overall musicality.
Same as you get with the SWLP. I feel that the tube
rectifier upgrade adds more 'tube' sound to the 9.0SE
without detracting in any way from the unit's fantastic bass
response, dynamics and sparkling highs. The low noise
floor is also maintained, if not improved upon.
If you are interested in purchasing a new SWL 9.0SE ('Signature
Edition'), then please give us a call to set up an
audition or place an order.
